Biography | Anju Dhillon | Federal Liberal Candidate for Dorval–Lachine–LaSalle

Biography

Standing up for social justice came naturally to Anju from an early age. It is the common thread throughout her career and life path; as a caregiver, committing herself to volunteer work in the best interests of community, managing her own law practice that she built from the ground up, and subsequent public service, she has, and will always continue to be there for those in need.

This is exemplified in Anju’s legislative initiative that became law in 2023; Bill C-233: An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Judges Act, also known as Keira’s Law across Canada. This piece of legislation irrevocably altered the administration of the justice system in matters of intimate partner violence (IPV). Before this law came into effect, coercive control was not recognized by the courts nor was IPV taken into consideration as a condition of release. The law also amended the Judges Act requiring judges to train in domestic violence and consider the risks to the safety of the survivor in determining whether an accused charged with intimate partner violence must wear an electronic monitoring device before being released. Prior to Keira's law, conditions of release did not include a monitoring device or even the mention of intimate partner violence. This law (Bill C-233), forever changed the legal landscape both in the criminal law and family law context. Bill C-233 inspired legislatures across Canada to implement similar initiatives. When the most vulnerable are protected in our society, it saves lives and makes for safer communities across Canada.

Along with being a Member of the Quebec Bar, Anju is also a Certified Mediator in Civil, Commercial and Employment Law. She holds a Master of Laws Degree and Juris Doctor (JD) from Université de Sherbrooke, a Bachelor of Law from Université de Montréal and she graduated with Honours in Political Science from Concordia University (BA). In 2015, she was elected Member of Parliament and became Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Status of Women and has subsequently served in various portfolios and committees.

Born and raised in Dorval-Lachine-LaSalle, Anju made her debut in the political world at the young age of 13 as a volunteer for the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC). Throughout the numerous positions she held on the Association over the years, Anju ensured that her actions and initiatives reflected the LPC's values and principles. She has further practiced these with a Liberal Government that has brought forward important and progressive change in social justice issues, the environment and economy. As evidenced throughout her life of dedication to others, Anju will continue advancing the best interests of Canada, and all Canadians.
